Two events, looking at universities' relationships with industry and at the realization of their economic potential, will be held in Nancy, France, from 25 to 28 May 1998.

The first, an information day on relations between universities and the industrial world, will take place on 25 May 1998. Four universities participating in the EU's INNOVATION programme will present their experiences. These will show different means of raising awareness and stimulating the creation of new activities form the university base. In particular, the event will address:
- The creation of companies;
- Detection of transferable projects;
- Development of business plans;
- Assistance for technology transfer.

The second event, the annual congress and general assembly of the CURIE network of French universities and educational institutes, will take place from 26 to 28 May 1998. The congress, on 26 and 27 May, will look at the realization of universities' economic potential. Whilst the CURIE network involves 46 French universities, 14 engineering schools and 3 francophone universities, the congress is open to anyone with an interest in developing the economic potential of universities.

The principal objectives include the provision of information to those involved in developing the economic potential of universities. The sessions will be led by various national and international experts, who will discuss the various problems encountered. The sessions will focus on the following:

- Development of new activities;
- EU research contracts;
- Exploitation in human and social sciences;
- Exploitation of software developments;
- Involvement of universities in transfer structures;
- Marketing the expertise of universities.

The general assembly of the CURIE network will take place on the final day, 28 May 1998.
