Structural changes and transformations in contemporary societies

SASE'98, the tenth international conference on socio-economics will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 13 to 16 July 1998. The aim of the conference is to address the general theme of structural changes and transformations in contemporary societies.

The conference will be divided into three parts:

- The international conference of the International Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics which will involve over 450 presentations, organized by 21 research networks;
- The Austrian focus sessions which will comprise three sessions on structural changes and transformations, complex socio-economic modelling and Austrian research traditions in socio-economics;
- A presentation of the EuroSASE project where the main elements of European socio-economic research will be discussed, in particular, the EU's specific programme of targeted socio-economic research (TSER).

The main questions to be addressed during the conference include:

- Is globalization producing convergence or divergence in structural changes?;
- Is the power of the state being reduced because of global competition?;
- What are the consequences of these transformations for inequality?;
- Are different structural changes occurring in different parts of the world?
