Details of the final four seminars to be held in the series of transnational seminars organised by the European Commission as part of the consultation process on the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESPD) are now available.

These will be held as follows:

- A seminar on a new rural-urban partnership to be held in Salamanca, Spain, on 15 and 16 October 1998. This will investigate the current situation of rural areas in Europe and the challenge of economic restructuring, examining the impact of regional, agricultural and environmental policies and the possible added value of spatial planning to rural development. The practical application of the ESDP policy options will also be examined in the various transnational cooperation areas set up under the INTERREG IIC and European Regional Development Fund areas;

- A seminar on environmentally sensitive areas (ESAs) will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 26 and 27 October 1998. The aim will be to provide a concise analysis of threats and opportunities in three types of ESAs, critically examine existing policies at EU level and the potential benefits of applying an integrated spatial approach in ESAs. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) will also be discussed, examining both the legal and institutional aspects and stakeholder participation, and will serve to launch a broad public debate which will culminate in a Commission communication on ICZM;

- A seminar on cooperation on spatial planning in the context of the enlargement of the EU will be held in Vienna, Austria, on 25 and 26 November 1998. This will aim to develop a collective view in order to create spatial policies that respond to the territorial diversity within Europe. The practical application of the EDSP in transnational cooperation zones on spatial planning set up under INTERREG IIC and the European Regional Development Fund will also be discussed.

Following this series of seminars the debate will be concluded with a large forum on spatial planning to be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 22 and 23 February 1999.
