Innovation in urban transport

Innovation in urban transport will be the main issue addressed during a conference to be held in Graz, Austria, on 25 and 26 November 1998. The event will be organised by the European Commission, in cooperation with the Austrian Ministry of Transport, the province of Styria and the City of Graz. One of the key features of the conference will be a presentation on new initiatives in European transport policy, such as the European Local Transport Information Systems (ELTIS), by the European Transport Commissioner, Mr Neil Kinnock.

The conference will focus on innovative solutions in urban transport on the basis of research done within the Fourth RTD Framework Programme. Research findings will also be contrasted with their practical applicability and political feasibility in order to transfer expertise between research, policy-makers and practitioners. The event will also offer participants the opportunity to gain a closer insight into future EU activities in transport.

Specific topics to be covered during the conference will include:

- Indicators and benchmarking;
- Encouraging sustainable travel;
- Physical measures and modal split;
- New transport technologies and services;
- Urban transport and quality of life;
- Making urban transport pricing work in different organisational settings;
- Urban transport telematics to support transport policy.
