The environmental research platform of the electronics industry in Europe "CARE VISION 2000" will hold its bi-annual conference in Vienna, Austria, from 16 to 19 November 1998. The event entitled "CARE INNOVATION 98" will comprise an international symposium, a brokerage event and an environmental exhibition. It will be supported by the EU's research programme in the field of Industrial and Materials Technologies (BRITE-EURAM), in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Creditanstalt-Bankverein.

The keynote presentations to be delivered during the conference will cover the following topics:

- Eco-efficient concepts - a competitive advantage in the global electronics market;
- Eco-efficient products and processes for competitive and sustainable growth - the research priorities of the Fifth Framework Programme;
- Global environmental protection technologies in the Matsushita Electric Group;
- Eco-design from an industrial perspective - present and future;
- Can the recycling industry fulfil the requirements of the draft EU legislation on waste from electrical and electronic equipment?

A series of parallel workshops will address topics in the fields of market, technology and end-of-life driven developments, evaluating and communicating progress as well as training for the future. A special session will provide an overview of the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme and will discuss issues related to its structure and rules for participation within the programme. The objectives and content of the thematic programmes will also be discussed and will be followed by a panel discussion on eco-labels.

The rationale of the European research initiative EUREKA, which supports cooperation between European firms and research institutes in the field of advanced technologies, and an overview of national funding possibilities will also be presented during the special session. This will be followed by a brokerage event, which will open with a presentation on the methodology of a EUREKA brokerage event.

The final day of the conference will offer participants the opportunity to take part in a technical excursion to companies and research organisations in the electronics and recycling industries in the Vienna region.
