NEXT 1.0 is a conference dedicated to 'New extensions of technology', to be held in Karlstad, Sweden, from 5 to 7 April 2000.
The event will be an opportunity to explore the aesthetic and discursive possibilities of digital technologies, bringing together practitioners and scholars engaged in the work of making these technologies meaningful to contemporary culture.
Proposals are being sought from scholars and artists working in new media arts, theory and criticism. Presentations may be in the form of scholarly papers or presentations, performance, installation or sculpture incorporating digital technologies, interactive or virtual video, virtual environments or network-based elements. Conference organisers said: 'We encourage proposals which push the boundaries of the traditional conference paper in form and content.'
Conference themes will encompass 'Creating content for interactive new media', 'Virtual connected communities', and 'Storytelling'.
Confirmed speakers include Monika Fleischmann, head of computer art activities at the German National Research Centre for Information Technology, and Rafael Lozano, artistic director at Spain's Telefonica.
