Bringing technologies and people together to improve life in the Information Society is the aim of the European Commission's stand, 'E-Quality of Life', at Telecom 99. The conference takes place in Geneva, Switzerland, from 10 to 17 October 1999.

'Telecom' was set up by the administrative council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1971 to hold an exhibition of telecommunications equipment to promote the benefits of telecommunications and demonstrate recent technological advances. It has been holding international conferences ever since. Members, include leading players from the telecommunications, computer and broadcasting industries as well as major user associations, private companies and research agencies.

With over 1,000 exhibitors and 200,000 influential visitors in Geneva - from government to industry to the world's media - Telecom 99 + Interactive 99 will provide an opportunity for innovators and visionaries to hear and be heard by the most powerful figures in the industry.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the European Commission's stand, which has been arranged into four main themes: convergence, mobile communications, electronic commerce and services for the citizen. The demonstrations and information emphasise the link between policy and research, considered crucial to achieving the objective of a coherent Information Society meeting the needs of Europe's economy and its citizens.
