'People, cities and the new information economy' is the subject of a conference being held in Helsinki, Finland, on 14 and 15 December 2000.

The conference will discuss the new world of work emerging from the information economy, and the possibilities for high-quality jobs especially in large urban conglomerations.

Conference organisers hope the event will help establish connections between companies in the ICT sector and representatives of European cities, as well as for researchers in urban policy.

The conference will focus on the following three key themes:

- companies and people in the knowledge economy;
- cities and digital networks;
- from social capital to competitiveness.

Keynote speakers include Erkki Liikanen, Commissioner for Enterprise and the Information Society, Veli-Pekka Niitamo, Director of Global Strategic Resourcing, Nokia Corporation, Saskia Sassen, Professor of Sociology and of the Social Sciences in the College, University of Chicago, and Leo van den Berg, Professor at the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research (EURICUR), Erasmus University Rotterdam.
