South Africa pushes for more medical cooperation
Professor Ramaranka Mogotlane will give a presentation on the work of the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) at the South African Embassy in Brussels on September 27. He will emphasise the importance of academic exchanges and collaborative research with colleagues in Europe in furthering the goals of medical scientists in South Africa.
MEDUNSA is home to the South African National School of Public Health which was established with the aid of funding from the European Union. As the largest medical faculty in the region, it is also a major centre of training in dentistry and pharmacy.
Its research covers many of the critical health problems facing sub Saharan Africa, including gastrointestinal diseases, mental health and sexually transmitted disease. There are also important research projects on countering tick-borne disease and chemical waste management.
The institution has also played a significant role in redressing the racial inequalities under the former apartheid regime and has a strategic role in training health professionals from neighbouring states in southern Africa.For further information, please contact:
