A workshop aiming to set concepts in motion in the field of sustainable development and research and development (R&D) policies is planned for 1 and 2 February 2001 by the German Federal Ministry for Research, the ITAS Institute, the European Commission's Research DG and the JRC's Institute for Prospective and Technological Studies (IPTS).

The event aims to address the increasing importance of R&D policy as a driver for innovation in Europe and the need to stimulate technological and organisational solutions for a more sustainable society.

'The European Commission's recent initiative on the European Research Area highlights the need to re-think thoroughly R&D policies in the European Union in order to tackle needs more effectively,' says the IPTS. The workshop will look at how the European Research Area could be put into practice in the field of research policies for sustainable development by identifying future research needs and innovative efficient organisational patterns.

The event also represents the kick-off meeting of a network of excellence composed of national representatives aimed at providing an on-going reference to support the implementation and the activities in the framework of the European Research Area and of national activities.

The organisers hope the workshop will stimulate a constructive dialogue between the public and the private sectors and include participation by the accession countries.
