The SENSPOL (Sensors for monitoring water pollution from contaminated land, landfills and sediment) steering group, created under the European Commission's Fifth Framework programme, is inviting the submission of papers for a workshop on sensing technologies for contaminated sites and groundwater, to be held in Madrid on 9 to 11 May 2001.

The workshop will address sensing technologies for the improvement of cost-efficiency of remediation technologies for contaminated sites and groundwater, assessment of the bioavailability of pollutants, monitoring groundwater contamination for cost-efficient risk-based site management, monitoring natural attenuation for groundwater remediation and data provision for new approaches to solving environmental problems. Relevant existing and emerging sensor technologies will both be highlighted, with particular emphasis on biomimetic systems, microtechnology, novel sampling techniques and multiparameter sensing. For further information, please contact
