Representatives from the European space agency (ESA) and European textile companies will meet to discuss how space technology can be used by the textile industry at a conference in Lille, France, on 4 and 5 July 2002.

Representatives from the European space agency (ESA) and European textile companies will meet to discuss how space technology can be used by the textile industry at a conference in Lille, France, on 4 and 5 July 2002.

The workshop has been organised by ESA's Technology transfer programme to find organisations and industries that want to discover how space technology can help them develop new products. Projects initiated as a result of the workshop will receive funding from the Technology transfer programme.

Suggested discussion topics so far include new technology for safety and security, involving clothes for search and rescue teams and material to provide warmth in harsh environments, as well as intelligent materials and portable computers.

Technology and know-how from European space programmes have already been used to address some of the challenges facing the textile industry. For example, space suits with internal cooling have been adapted by a Canadian company for use in sports clothing and outdoor garments. Technology employed in flameproof textiles used to construct Ariane launchers has also been adapted by a French company to make vandal-resistant protective material for lorries and haulage containers.For further information, please consult the following web address:
