The ETEX Symposium on long-range atmospheric transport, model verification and emergency response will take place in Vienna, Austria, on 13-16 May 1997. The Symposium is being organized by the European Environment Institute (Joint Research Centre), in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The symposium will provide a forum for discussions on long-range atmospheric diffusion and transport models, focusing on data from the European Tracer Experiment (ETEX). This experimental data set will be presented and compared to predictions. Aspects of real-time modelling and emergency response will also be examined. One session will be devoted to the sensitivity of the model predicted pollutant fields to meteorological inputs, mixed layer height, stability and orography.

The Symposium participants will include ETEX and ATMES participants. Representatives from international agencies, meteorological services and the modelling community are also encouraged to attend.

Specific topics to be covered will include:

- Experimental data bases for validation of long-range transport models, including atmospheric tracer techniques, balloon trajectories and experimental design;
- Comparison of model results and experimental data on long-range transport;
- Meteorological and dispersion modelling focusing on accuracy of meteorological input, mixed layer height, atmospheric stability, orography;
- Real-time modelling, quality of emergency response forecasts and their policy implications.
