The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) is launching ISSS, the Information Society Standardization System, at a meeting in Brussels, Belgium, on 24 and 25 February 1998.

ISSS is intended to fill the gap between informal and formal standardization in the information and communications technology field. In view of the rapid pace of technological development in this field, there is a need for faster and less complex specification writing. The ISSS will aim to build consensus across a wide range of sectors through an open workshop approach. It will enable the key players to make decisions on standards.

The ISSS workshops will produce technical specifications and guidance material. Whilst these will not be formal standards, by using basic drafting guidelines they will be formulated in such a way that they can be converted into formal standards with little additional effort.

ISSS will also give support to the formal European ICT standards process. In view of the range of different organizations involved in both formal and informal standardization in the ICT field, ISSS will aim to ensure the maximum level of coordination of these activities.

The launch meeting is aimed at introducing businesses to the ISSS process, and the opportunities which will be established for solving challenges in the field. The keynote speech will be given by Mr. Magnus Lemmel, Deputy Director-General of the European Commission's Industry Directorate-General (DG III). Other presentations will give industry and user perspectives, as well as outlining the ISSS structure and aims. Following the opening plenary, parallel workshops and seminars will address the following topics:

- Electronic commerce;
- Directory;
- Metadata for multimedia information;
- Security and trust;
- Safety-critical software.
