Research programme (EEC, Euratom) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - Reactor safety -, 1977-1979
The second multiannual programme on reactor safety was drawn up in accordance with the Council Resolution of 17 December 1970, concerning the procedures for adopting research and training programmes (Official Journal No L 16 of 20.1.1971). Initially adopted for a period of four years (1977- 1980), the programme was replaced by a new four-year programme as of 1 January 1980 and unused funds were allocated to the new programme.
Research in this field constituted the JRC's largest programme, accounting for 25% of the JRC's total research effort. This reflected the priority given by the Community to nuclear reactor safety research.
This field of activity was increasingly integrated into international efforts in order to benefit from the enlarged exchange of experience. The programme was designed to give full effect to the benefits derived from concentrating activities into large-scale nuclear research facilities.
To refine the methodology of safety assessment, to improve the application of that methodology and to confirm, by practical experiments, its assumptions and conclusions.
Six projects:
- Reliability and risk assessment;
- Out-of-pile and in-pile studies of accidents involving loss of coolant in light water reactors;
- Liquid metal fast breeder sub-assembly thermohydraulics;
- Core melt-down and fuel-coolant interactions;
- Dynamic structure loading and response;
- Prevention of structural failure in reactors.
The Commission, assisted by the board of governors of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), was responsible for the implementation of the programme. The research activities were carried out at the Ispra establishment.
