To enable successful implementation of cardiac gene therapies it is of critical importance to develop improved gene transfer methods to target the heart and/or vascular system. In this project we therefore explored novel gene transfer method. Our initial efforts have been directed towards the field of gene therapy-based biological pacing. Our newly identified gene transfer methods are instrumental to the broader field of cardiovascular gene therapy.
The experimental work that we performed focused on two vector system with high tropism for the heart, adenoviral vectors (AdV) and adeno associated viral vectors (AAV). For both vector systems we identified methods and/or new variants with high potential for translational development in the context of biological pacing and the broader field of cardiovascular gene therapy.
