Report on framework for uncertainty estimates as part of secondary quality control (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)

A report quantitatively assessing inconsistencies when comparing sets collected by different groups or using different methods. By considering several data sets at once and consistently evaluating data quality and differences between data sets, can result in a more usable data product of higher overall quality. Our assessment will add noise (analogous to measurement precision) and a weighting scheme to the existing GLODAP framework. We will test these extensions to the framework using synthetic data (for example model output), salinity and nutrient data collected on the demonstration cruise and a data set from the Mediterranean Sea (currently not part of the full GLODAP product).

Report of data curation recommendations including gap analysis (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)

We will assess the European data system for both real time and quality-controlled data. Real-time data submission is innovative and only operates for a few ships at the moment. Here we will map the current extent and efficacy of real-time data submission from ships. Based on the requirement (assessed by WP4) this task will evaluate the cost, feasibility and protocols for real-time data submission with full automation being a clear target. For fully quality controlled data we will map national protocols (and the extent to which they are applied) for submission of data to different data centres. This mapping exercise will highlight gaps in appropriate data archives and standardized formats on a parameter level. We will develop a new data flow protocol, including new identifier scheme and harmonized data formats; through a single ingestion point at national level, data (and data updates) shall flow automatically to international archives and services (at EU level eg SeaDataNet, Copernicus, EMODnet, and internationally the GO-SHIP data centre, CCHDO). Metadata and identifier allocation shall be managed through OceanOPS, allowing for cross-cutting monitoring and analysis with other ocean observing systems and projects (at EU level eg EuroArgo or Eurofleets, at international scale all GOOS activities). An example of a new recommended data format and data pathway for ADCP data will be developed.

Summary of the range of possible RI structures, with preferred option (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)

A report determining a range of structures for the EuroGO-SHIP RI and undertake an initial consultation to determine which of these is most viable. We will explore several options for Governance and architecture, including the establishment of RI that provides all its own services through to one supported by the activities of several RIs, which would be a new model for sustainability. We foresee a novel, bold model where activities would be performed (and funded) in common across the RI landscape. Our report will evaluate a range of models as well as a recommendation for the way forward.

Report of refined scope of shared facilities (odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie)

We will describe a refined suite of shared facilities including scale, scope, feasibility, and cost. In the first instance these will be the around observations of salinity, nutrients, oxygen, velocity, carbon system parameters and transient tracers, with each led by a parameter expert from within the consortium. While our initial parameter list is based on priority International GO-SHIP parameters and GOOS EOVs we will include refining this list in the scope of work for this task. These shared facilities, which will evolve through the work undertaken in the project, will include:•Capability – associated with specialised analyses (e.g., transient tracers or low concentration nutrient observations) and instrumentation•Certified reference materials for high quality chemical analyses•Training (including virtual, in land-based laboratories and at sea)•Software for Primary quality control of observational data•Best practice (for all aspects of observing and data handling including cruise logistics)•A European Marine Equipment Pool: for sharing equipment that is otherwise unavailable from individual sensors and analytical equipment to containerised labs that are easily transported and mobilised
