"The Singlet Oxygen Strategy: sustainable oxidation procedures for applications in material science, synthesis, wastewater treatment, diagnostics and therapeutics"

Cel

"The SO2S network seeks to exploit Singlet Oxygen (1O2) as a green and benign oxidant for use in novel synthetic methodologies, crosslinking strategies, bioconjugation procedures and materials production. The chemistry described herein generates the means to both understand and influence biological systems by providing probes and reagents – from analytical methods to new drugs - and to modulate materials towards optimal properties.
Training in this area is highly interdisciplinary in nature requiring the joint efforts and contributions of chemists, physicists, biologists and material scientists. Ultimately our understanding and further development of singlet oxygen mediated oxidations should lead to useful applications in the fields of organic chemistry (improved routes towards natural products), medicinal chemistry (targeted delivery and novel diagnostics), physical chemistry (controlled singlet oxygen generation), and materials science (novel materials for water treatment and new arrays for improved diagnostics). The global objective of this network is to train young researchers to become skilled individuals that meet the current challenges of working in an interdisciplinary industrial environment wherein chemistry often forms the basis, but where it is utilized in a truly diverse range of applications."
