Production and removal of dissolved organic matter in contrasting oceanic environments

Cel

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) makes up the second largest of the bio-reactive pools of carbon in the ocean and plays a central role in the ocean carbon cycle. But little is known about what is this role, how is it realized and what are its mechanisms and controls. One of the major priorities is the identification of the truly important mechanisms of DOC production. Many publications present a large list of processes (phytoplankton exudation, herbivory, lysis, particle dissolution, etc.) but in truth we do not know which are significant when. A better understanding on the processes involved in the production and removal of DOC will allow for better predictions on DOC dynamics in the pelagic system.

The main objective of the research activity presented by the candidate is to test the following hypothesis: "There is a gradient of decreasing DOC bioreactivity from productive to oligotrophic waters which is related with different mechanisms of DOC production, and these differences have important consequences in th e bacterial community structure and in the carbon cycle. This Marie-Curie re-integration fellowship will allow the transfer of knowledge between the NIOZ (The Netherlands) and the University of Vigo, (Spain) and in addition, ensure a long lasting co-operation between both institutions.

The introduction of the novel technique MICRO-CARD-FISH in the host group will increase the available tools for the study of the marine planktonic ecosystem and give the opportunity to the host group of taking a leading posit ion in this novel application in Spain. Furthermore, this project would imply the possibility for the candidate to get a stable research position at her country of origin.
