Noisy Electromagnetic Fields - A Technological Platform for Chip-to-Chip Communication in the 21st Century

C2C design guidelines - draft

Signal processing protocols including suitable coding strategies using physics based concepts, EM signals and noise characteristics will be set up. Design tools based on physical models will be developed to estimate signal transfer rates and information theoretic performance.

Procedures for modelling EMF & assessing information theoretic performance

Carrying out model simulations on benchmarks defined in WP1 with existing software from UoN, IMST, ISAE and CST.

Roadmap for C2C design plan

Plan for a technological realization of integrated antennas and integrated circuits for wireless C2C communications for two-port and multi-port (MIMO) wireless links.

Procedure for measuring EM fields

A set procedure for measuring EM fields will have been worked out by project partners.

Health and safty guidelines

Local and national guidelines concerning health and safety policies of the institutions will be provided in months 7.

Design proposals for C2C ICs

Design proposals for C2C ICs including antenna, DMMs, receivers and packaging will be delivered in a report.

Measurement results for antenna radiation patterns.

The tests and measurements down in WP3 will be collected in a report.

Validation data set and numerical data

Various software packages will be verified using experimental test data.

C2C design guidelines - final

Guidelines for a future C2C technology will be formulated. Optimisation strategies will be developed for setting up C2C arrangements minimising unwanted interference.

Data pool for results from WP1 and WP2.

Creating data pool containing measurement and simulation data.

Efficient measurement set-up and protocol for measuring near field correlation functions;

An experimental determination of the near-filed of wireless C2C components will be served as input for the numerical simulation done in WP6. The measurement set-up tested in WP1 need to be enhanced to describe stochastic fields by performing 2 or more point measurements efficiently at different positions and coherent in time. A report on this will be delivered.

Antenna prototypes on mm and cm scale

Driven by the know-how at NXP, schemes for integrated antenna arrangements with potential for C2C communication (dipole, zigzag, ground–plate...) will be designed, manufactured and tested both scaled up (cm range) and at the chip level scale (mm and sub-mm range) in close cooperation with WP5.

Numerical tool-box to support antenna design decisions;

Software for C2C modelling will be developed.

Numerical solvers for propagating noisy EMF

Modelling methods for the multi-scale propagation of EM fields (nano to micro scale for chip structure, mm to cm scale for chip enclosure and wavelengths for 10-100 GHz range) with stochastic components coming from different physical sources (thermal, interference, cross talk, wired interconnects and IC components etc) will be developed. Numerical solvers for propagating modulated, coded and stochastic EMF in complex environments will be developed.

Kick-off meeting

A kick-off meeting taking place in Nottingham will be organised at least 15 days after the start of the project.

Delivering effective management

Managing the project will be done overall by UoN. Organize the project meetings; supervision of the project and the procedures between board meetings; setting up a project web page including a work board;

Communication and presentation including DMP

Protocols and guidelines will be set up which will help future design efforts. Implementation of the modelling software into existing software packages will be evaluated and planed. Extension of the modelling tools to other research areas such as EMC compliance and reverberation chamber design and testing will be evaluated. Workshops including dedicated transfer of knowledge as well as exploitation events and the final conference will be organised. A DMP will be set up within the first 6 months of the project. Data pool as part of DMP will be made available.
