Workflow for the installation of gas sensing equipment on siteThis report will describe how the new spectroscopy-based instrument setups may be cross-calibrated and optimised across field sites to quantify gas, to derive gas flux, and how systems may be integrated with existing sensors, or optimised to monitor environmental leaks or bursts of gas activity from natural and engineered structures. This could be used for precise continuous environmental near-surface gas monitoring at field sites before, during and after operation.
Models for decay of cement based concrete samplesMolecular modeling using the reactive ReaxFF approach will be performed to identify and quantify the atomistic mechanisms of decay and failure of cement-based materials in contact with host rocks. Cement and concrete compositions of higher durability for the specific geological conditions of interest and various sub-surface operations will be proposed based on the molecular simulation reaults.
Demonstration of the LCA software against field dataTWI to develop a new tool to interface with commercial software (e.g., GaBi) and allow further analysis based on the outcomes and best practice developed. The features of such tool will be a user-interface for entering relevant data, computational modul implemented and output module presenting the results. This software will be then demonstrated using filed data.
Case study integration of multi-risk and LCA assessments for sub-surface geo-energy systemsIntegration of a holistic, risk-based, life cycle assessment in which the LCA process fully contemplates assessing and managing risks. This will be accomplished by developing an interface between the LCA and the MR assessments.

Sample rock physical and chemical characterisation, including pore networkRock samples will be characterised at the microscale using electron-beam surface analysis such as Qemscan for mineral assignments, 3D texture analysis using x-ray tomography and oriented permeability and porosity using experimental rock physics laboratories at UCL. This report will provide this data for samples from the different field sites, and comparisons with European and N American data as part of a large rock core library managed by UCL.
Workflow for adsorption experiments on samples at geologic temperature and pressure conditionsBecause of the relatively weak affinity of gases to geological (natural) samples as compared to commercial adsorption materials, the work will initially focus on the development of an appropriate experimental protocol to achieve the required measurement reproducibility. By profitably selecting different vapors the possibility will be investigated of accessing pore space with distinct wettabilities, a feature that may prove to be particularly beneficial for the characterization of mixed-wet systems.
Workflow for the installation of sensing skins on siteThis report will describe the procedure of applying an electrically based sensing skin on-site, for detecting cracks on the surfaces of solid structures. The selection of materials, measurement techniques and computational methods for data-analysis will be covered in the report.
Multi-scale models of fluid behaviour in cement and rock samplesKinetic Monte Carlo and other multi-scale modeling approaches will be used to up-scale the molecualr modeling results of D5.1 and to allow a multi-scale quantification of fluid transport in cement. The same approach will be used to characterize the fluid behavior in host rocks. The model describing the transport of tracers in porous materials, and how it is able to reproduce experimental data from lab testing experiments, will also be described in this deliverable.

Methane and ethane gas analysis in combination with carbon dioxide isotope analysis at specific locationsThis report will describe selection criteria for gas samples from field sites using their chemical and isotopic characteristics in the context of their 3D subsurface source(s). A subset of gas (especially methane) samples will be analysed using new mass spectrometer-based isotopologue instrument in USA, and assessed for the viability of this method in discriminating between natural and anthropogenic sources of gas in the European environment.

Validation of sensing skin and well integrity monitoring techniques on field sitesTWI to validate the SHM system (developed in D 6.3) under operational conditions at the CO2 storage injector/producer at the Rusanda site and geothermal well at St Gallen. Modelling results of fluid pathways in cement based concrete samples and rock samplesUsing the ClayFF parameterization of interatomic interactions, new molecular scale models of fluid-cement interfaces will be developed. Atomistic simulations will be used to quantitatively assess the preferential surface adsorption (e.g., water and ions as opposed to CO2 ), to further quantify transport mechanisms of fluid components in cementitious materials.
Development of groundwater conceptual and numerical circulation modelThis report will focus on the field site charcaterization conducted as described in Task 4.6. The report will include the interpretation of the experimental data, as well as a conceptual rendering of the field site inclusive of geological features and will then provide a numerical model to describe the circulation of groundwater around the site.
Determination of biological samples identity for samples collected from field sitesReport will provide a description of the microbial communities found in field samples and an assessment of their role and reactivity during the storage operations. This will be based on using molecular survey of 16S rDNA and functional genes that would allow to infer metabolisms.
Validation of the fluid migration models based on field site dataThe report will describe the fluid migration models for drilling, testing and circulation. Derived predictions of fluid migration are tested and validated through micro-seismic and hydraulic test data.

Workflow for the implementation of novel well integrity monitoring techniquesTWI to develop a Structural Health Monitoing (SHM) system which includes Acoustic Emission, Vibration Analysis and Guided Wave Ultrasonics techniques in order to gather, process and interpret data which provide essential information on the integrity of the wells tubings and casings. The SHM system will then be validated via laboratory trials.
Validation of model for fluid migration against field-site dataPredictions made from the fluid migration models are tested and validated against micro-seismic and hydraulic data. The models will be adjusted as appropriate to fit the field-site data. Geomecon : geomecon will employ a software package based on the eXtended FEM (XFEM), i.e., roxolTM to simulate the propagation, initiation and reactivation of fractures; the software offers the unique possibility to understand the fracturing process during hydraulic fracturing campaigns applied in the extraction of unconventional oil and gas, which will enable the safe deployment of geo-energy operations in Europe. Within S4CE the software package will be calibrate against the existing well characterised data set from St. Gallen inclusive of data before, during and after gas production to gain further insight into the observed induced seismicity and allow explicit models of fracture propagation and fluid transport in sub-surface formations. These models are than implemented into large-scale fully coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics, a finite element code, on the St Gallen data set to evaluate whether poroelastic effects or fast fluid flow along fractures caused the induced seismicity in St Gallen.
Seismic methodology for assessing the probability of rapid fluid transportApplication of methodologies developed for the volcanic environment to the fluid-solid coupling of two phases fluid (gas and water) during subsurface geo-engineering efforts.
Proof of concept laboratory demonstration of a EIT based sensing skin for well cap structuresIn this report, a laboratory demonstration of electrically based sensing skin for monitoring well cap structures will be provided. The main focus in on the detection of surface breaking cracks on large scale. Secondly, the possibility of detecting the presence of supercritical CO2 will be investigated.
Enrichment and isolation of key metabolically active microorganismsIdentify and sequence the whole genome of up to 5 new metabolic groups of Archaea and Bacteria involved in sulfur and/or carbon cycles.
Project Management PlanThis report will contain general operational information including the Gantt chart and a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), reporting processes, planning and protocols for communication within the consortium, quality control processes, risk logs and the procedures for risk monitoring, decision-making and conflict resolution, templates, etc. A second release is foreseen at month 22.

S4CE Database on Is-Epos platform – Evaluation ReportThis report will explain the content of the database platform developed in conjunction with our collaborators, will assess the reliability of the data, will contain the procedures for assessing the data and for adding additional data in the future. The report will also document how effective the data repository has been for the applications proposed by the consortium, and whether others have accessed the data in the database during the length of the project.
Report on the capability of studying rock samples at variousTo quantify how rock-characterisation and fluid composition data change as a function of the pressure, S4CE will design and construct the laboratory apparatus that will allow us to connect to the high-pressure samples. The advanced high-pressure laboratory equipment is designed to replicate both (i) deep subsurface reservoir conditions and (ii) the transport of samples to the surface (decompression) to quantify gas release (hydrocarbons, gas content) and monitor the physical changes of gas-shale rock during decompression. S4CE will test the depressurisation method on synthetic /alternative samples in order to demonstrate the technique. This includes pressurising regular shale samples with known quantities of gas, and then decompressing them as planned in our custom-built equipment to quantify the amount of gas that would be extracted. The report will describe the site selection and subsurface geology providing context to the sample acquisition with this procedure, as well as a characterisation of the samples themselves.
Set of adsorption isotherms combined with permeability for selected rock samplesStatic adsorption experiments will be conducted by using different gases (e.g., CO2 and light hydrocarbons) and two different techniques, namely a gravimetric method (High-Pressure Rubotherm Magnetic Suspension Balance) and a recently developed imaging-based method that uses X-ray micro CT. Experiments will be performed using various rock types, including carbonates with significant microporosity, shale and cements.
Model for fluid migration in the subsurfaceTo monitor fluid migration, the occurrence of induced seismicity as a signature for the local increase of hydraulic pressure will be used to map relative and absolute pressure changes over time. The derived model will permit fluid flow mapping in the subsurface during drilling (by drilling mud pressure, kicks and loss of fluid), testing, hydraulic stimulation and geothermal circulation.
PUSH50 pressurised biological samplesThis report will describe the procedures implemented for collecting and retrieving biological samples from formation conditions and what is done to maintain the samples at formation conditions while being transported. If possible, the report will also include the processes to transfer the samples from the PUSH 50 instrument to the characterization instruments.
Microbe and mineral assemblages and reactivity to gas injection from field samplesThis report will gather observations made at the microscale to characterize the interactions between microorganisms and rocks/minerals. This will be done by combining high resolution spectroscopic and imaging techniques (FISH/CLSM experiments coupled with Raman/FTIR microscopy along with electronic microscopy) with laser capture microdissection and single-cell genomic.
Workflow on testing fluid transport properties of cement based samples by electrical imagingThis report will provide results of testing the feasibility of electrical imaging (ERT and/or ECT) for monitoring fluid flows in cement-based materials. Description of laboratory experiments for testing the transport properties of the materials will be provided. The special focus is on monitoring distributions of supercritical CO2 in concrete materials used in casings.
Gas sensor performance quantitative assessment and associated operation protocolsA report for the laboratory calibration and performance of the new gas spectroscopy instruments (D3.3, D3.4) against standard gases and gas mixtures within the dynamic range and large variation in gas concentrations expected across the different field site environments. This may include measures of reproducibility and time series analysis at outdoors test sites under different atmospheric and climatic conditions.
Policy recommendations for the environmentally conscious deployment of sub-surface operationsThose set of protocols (from D8.3) will be gathered by TWI to provide the basis of operator policies and procedures and inform government authorities and regulatory bodies when setting legislation for each technology.
Models for CO2 carbonation in various environments and in the presence of H2O and H2SThe ReaxFF approach will be used to develop a theoretical understanding of the molecular mechanisms for CO2 fixation in sub-surface formations. This will require the parameterization of ReaxFF force fields for the given environments, relying on DFT reference data, as well as the extension of ReaxFF to sufficiently long time scales to be experimentally relevant.
Final Report on Work-In-Progress Forums and Geo-Energy Information-Exchange MeetingsThis report will document the effectiveness of our dissemination and cross-pollination events, and how information and best-practice procedures have been transferred from North America to European operations, and vice versa.
