Scientific report on current fisheries sector economics for selected fleet components in perspective of potential mesopelagic resource exploitation

This final report will provide an estimate of the costs of mesopelagic fishing under a number of exploitation scenarios based on the cost structure described in D61 and cost data collected from vessels from Denmark Spain and The Netherlands potentially involved in this kind of fisheries

Modelling workshop report

Scientific report summarising the four WP5 models (S6, StrathSPACE, NORWECOM.E2E, SEAPODYM) in order to provide the starting point for the collation of the new and existing data (D5.2). The report will focus on listing the model parameters and output variables, together with identification of the associated data requirements, needed for parameter estimation and fitting the models to existing and new data on the target species such as Benthosema glaciale, Maurolicus muelleri, Meganyctiphanes norvegica and pelagic shrimps.

Policy landscape manuscript

This manuscript will be based on an institutional analysis Ostrom 2005 of the fishing biodiversity and carbon policies relevant to mesopelagic resource management and based on a combination of deskbased policy analysis and semistructured interviews with international experts in ocean governance

Synthesis report on biomass distribution in the MEESO regions in relation to environmental variables.

Scientific report applying various statistically robust methods (e.g. GAMs, probabilistic modelling approach) to explore the effect of biological and ocean dynamic environment on the abundance of mesopelagic species and their spatial distribution. The most important explanatory variables explaining mesopelagic species abundance patterns, both in horizontal and vertical scale will be identified.

Synthesis report on the stocks, oceanographic relationships, vital rates, ecological position, distribution and dynamics of mesopelagic fauna.

Scientific report on key biological parameters for the populations of M. muelleri and B. glacialis In the MEESO regions. Statistical analyses will be carried out comparing the results obtained between areas. The results will allow us to see if there are different strategies among the populations of the different regions and how they may be influenced by environmental variables. Time series of M. muelleri in the Bay of Biscay will be used to develop mesopelagic species spatial abundance models to explore the effect of biological and ocean dynamic environment. GAMs will be developed to identify the most important explanatory variables explaining mesopelagic species abundance patterns within a Model Averaging Approach.

Manuscript on the frames, perceptions, and values related to mesopelagic exploitation, to be submitted to scientific journal

This scientific report will explore and map the wider public's perception of mesopelagic fishing, and the framing and values that determine public acceptance of mesopelagic fishing, based on focus group discussions carried out in Task 6.3

Report on meta-data catalogue for data resources
Collated cruise reports with regional maps of distribution and abundance of mesopelagic communities in the North Atlantic focusing on potential fishing areas.

Report synthesizing information from all MEESO cruises on abundance distribution life history traits eg length weight feeding of key components of the mesopelagic fauna at the finest taxonomic scale possible in addition to data on horizontal and vertical distribution of marine snow for selected cruises and oceanographic parameters such as temperature salinity light penetration and chlorophylla

Report on initial demographic parameters

Scientific report on so far collated and existing information from published literature and current outputs from the work packages on fishing technology development WP3 and the field campaign data WP4 in order to provide initial parameters and fitting data for the WP5 modelling tasks for the main species stocks focused upon such as Benthosema glaciale Maurolicus muelleri Meganyctiphanes norvegica pelagic shrimps These initial parameters can be updated during the course of the field campaign and field data analyses

Scientific report or peer reviewed publications(s) on the outputs of the StrathSPACE, NORWECOM.E2E, and SEAPODYM models under varying fishing mortality and projected climate change scenarios. The reported outputs will provide regional to global scale inter-comparisons, including estimates of the sensitivity of B. glaciale and M. muelleri stocks over the North Atlantic to overall harvesting pressure, spatially varying harvesting pressure, and to climate change (StrathSPACE), the sensitivity of mesopelagic regulation of carbon fluxes to fishing and climate scenarios in the Norwegian Sea (NORWECOM.E2E), and the estimation of biomass and mesopelagic functional group dynamics at the global scale (SEAPODYM).

Cooperation between MEESO and SUMMER. Activities and contributions to project outcomes.

The report will summarise the outcome of Task 9.4 of MEESO and the equivalent Task of SUMMER on the bullet points of cooperation and coordination mentioned there.

Manuscript on extreme outcomes of mesopelagic exploitation and their plausibility, to be submitted to scientific journal

This scientific report will explore the range and plausibility of possible 'unknown unknowns' in mesopelagic fishing, i.e. uncertain outcomes that cannot be taken into account in existing models, based on focus group discussions and interviews carried out in Task 6.2. It will describe the main extreme outcomes from mesopelagic fishing that are of concern among the major stakeholders; the social-economic and biophysical pathways that might lead to such outcomes; and the plausibility of these pathways.

Report on training materials

These training materials will include policy-oriented outreach for decision-makers in government industry and civil society (briefing notes and maps identifying relevant policies for fisheries, biodiversity and carbon to be submitted as an ICES data resource

Project Dissemination Plan

Dissemination plan and overview on internal project communication and dissemination with communication means, structures, pathways, and timelines. This also includes an overview of planned reports, publications of different types, articles, project products, administrative documents, exploitation plans, data management plans, and other dissemination by work package and overall for the project and between work packages, including the management work package. There will be distinguished between the public and the project internal products and outcomes. The different work packages and work package leads including the project management and coordinator will directly specify and deliver work package explicit input to the dissemination plan with outcomes and products according to the respective work packages and management coverages, topics and responsibilities.

Provide videos and manuals on best surveying and fishing practices for focus mesopelagic species and resources The project will run cruise campaign blogs and invite journalists where relevant to cruise and trial fisheries campaigns in a coordinated manner and there will be released in a cooperation between WP2 WP3 and WP4 short introductory videos and potentially manuals of survey and fishing processes showing best fishing and surveying practice

Project internet representation established.

Establishment of a project website and portal with direct link through existing well established scientific/advisory/management portals/platforms, e.g. ICES portal (among other associated to some relevant data portals for the project). There will be established a public portal part structured according to the overall project structure and the project description, i.e. by work package and topics hereunder, giving access to the public parts of the project including publications of different types, public reports, articles, public teaching and workshop material, exploitation plan, public data products and data management plan, etc. by work package. Also, there will be established an associated project internal portal part (using the same link but with a password access sub-link for project partners) giving access to the project internal parts and reports including status and progress reports, management reports, administrative documents, minutes and reports from meetings and workshops and similar by work package. The different work packages and work package leads including the project management and coordinator will directly specify and deliver work package explicit input to the dissemination plan with outcomes and products according to the respective work packages and management coverages, topics and responsibilities.

Data Management Plan in cooperation with WP1

This plan will provide guidance on and promote efficient data management through existing data platforms to secure optimal storage, long term use, standardized designs and formats, as well as public availability of historic/new data including Data Journalism Communities for “data mining”. This will include advice on appropriate links to data sets with standardized design and format for ICES and STECF and OECD data centres as well as to EMONET, COPERNICUS and similar relevant data platforms. This also includes providing information from and connecting to other existing data platforms such as Global Fishing Watch (fishing effort maps) and other relevant stakeholder platforms.
