Periodic Reporting for period 1 - EIPOD4 (EMBL Interdisciplinary Postdoc Programme 4)
Okres sprawozdawczy: 2019-12-01 do 2021-11-30
EIPOD4 fellows complete a well-balanced training programme focused on transferable skills. Included are workshops on open science initiatives (open access journals, principles of FAIR, management/repository of big data), career development, gender and diversity, intellectual property and entrepreneurship. They also receive public engagement training from the programme partner, the Natural History Museum (NHM).
EIPODs have access to professional career development support via the EMBL Fellows career service. Together with the programme’s Career Advisor, they establish a personal career development plan to define career goals and identify areas for personal and scientific growth. EIPOD4 fellows wishing to leave academic research can explore non-academic career opportunities via a novel career secondment scheme. They receive mentoring from the group leaders involved in their research projects and through participation in EMBL’s Second Mentor Programme. The novel EIPODs Inspire scheme allows them to develop their own mentoring skills by mentoring Master students from EMBL's member states.
The programme enhances the potential and future career perspectives of supported fellows with excellent and cutting-edge interdisciplinary research training, proactive career development support and a balanced selection of mandatory and optional training opportunities. This well-trained group of researchers will be well placed to take advantage of a diverse range of professional career opportunities available in the life sciences both within and outside of academia.
The recruited fellows received 3-year contracts to work on self designed interdisciplinary projects as part of 3 available tracks: academic, industry and clinical. The majority of the fellows chose the academic track. This was followed by the industry and lastly the clinical track in terms of candidate interest.
EIPODs are supported by the EIPOD team at all stages of their interaction with the programme. Forty-two of the sixty-four fellows have started their fellowships. The remaining fellows, from the 2021 EIPOD call, will start between January-July 2022. EIPOD fellows work on research projects involving two or more EMBL groups often located across EMBL sites. They may also have an external partner from another academic institute, industry, clinics and museums depending on their research interests. The programme manager supports EIPODs with the logistics involved in visiting partner labs at different locations. Despite the pandemic, many of the fellows with remote partners have spent time in their labs in the first two years of the EIPOD4 programme.
EIPOD4 fellows also take part in a training programme focused on complementary skills for scientists. Topics include career development, gender aspects of science, responsible and open science and intellectual property and entrepreneurship in science. They also complete public engagement training with the programme’s partner, The Natural History Museum in London, England. The 2019 cohort finished the training programme. Unfortunately, it was not possible for them to engage in an outreach activity at the museum as was originally envisaged due to the pandemic. The programme is exploring whether they can participate with a later EIPOD cohort.
EIPOD4 fellows also have access to the EMBL Fellows career service and EMBL’s Complementary Scientific Skills programme (providing transferable skills training for scientists) supporting their career development and transition to new positions following their time at EMBL. They are regularly made aware of these offers.
The programme is responsible for a number of reporting activities to the EC as defined in the grant agreement. Reporting duties for the first two years of the programme have been completed.
The fellows profit from career development support allowing them to define career goals and identify trainings relevant to reaching their goals. A Career secondment scheme also provides opportunities to develop skills relevant to preferred career paths. Upon completion of the programme, they will be well placed to make informed decisions about their future careers and will have the skills and experience needed to make them attractive to relevant employers.
EIPODs complete a mandatory training programme targeting transferable skills and topics important for researchers today. They learn about the importance of science communication and outreach via training provided by the programme’s public engagement partner, the Natural History Museum.
The EIPOD4 programme contributes to the attractiveness of EMBL as a training institute for young researchers. It also fosters the institute’s networks regionally, globally and across sectors which has a strategic impact on the European Research Area by increasing the visibility of Europe as a leading destination for research and innovation. Furthermore, many of the excellent researchers recruited globally into the programme will take up positions in Europe following their time at EMBL increasing Europe’s human capital base.
Upon completion of the programme, EIPOD4 fellow will possess skills beneficial to a wide range of leadership positions both within and outside of academia. The cohort of 64 researchers is expected to have a visible impact in the sectors they move into. Their unique training will foster new mind-sets and approaches to research and a deep understanding of the importance of supporting open science, dissemination and public engagement. Collectively the programme will enhance career perspectives for EIPOD4 fellows and contribute to Europe’s competitiveness and growth by improving the quality of research and innovation.
