Innovative user-centred solution to transform upper limb amputees’ treatment

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - OneHAND (Innovative user-centred solution to transform upper limb amputees’ treatment)

Okres sprawozdawczy: 2020-12-01 do 2022-02-28

The market for upper limb prosthetic products and services are fragmented, with the users often bearing the cost in terms of uncertain rehabilitation journeys and expensive or insufficient products. This of course impacts the users well being and health.
The OneHand project aims to bridge a gap in the market by providing a user centric solution in the form of a cost effective prosthesis with good functionality, a unique VR training platform and standardised upper limb rehabilitation guidelines – setting a new standard across all these areas as there no such products in the market as of today.
Summary of work in RP1:

- TSC has developed the first VR rehab and training solution - an "Italian kitchen" theme where users can train using their prosthetic in a completely new and interactive way.

- Hy5 has finalised the OneHand prosthetic - a cost effective prosthesis with an anatomical look and feel, has 6 different grips and is waterproof and customisable.

- IC2A has completed the final draft of the literature review and guidelines for upper limb amputation. This is currently awaiting proof reading for final stakeholder review and publication.
This publication will improve the clinical pathway for rehabilitation personnel involved with upper limb amputations as well as the amputees themselves. The guidelines will aim to assist in creating user focused rehabilitation treatment pathways supported by an evidence based literature review. IC2A highlights during RP1:

• Completed a draft desk review of available literature.
• Project team, informed by the working group, decided to produce two guidelines to cover all people with limb loss. These will be upper limb amputation rehabilitation guidelines and upper limb deficiency habilitation guidelines.
• Draft literature review shared with working group for feedback
• Completed draft upper limb amputation rehabilitation guidelines
• Draft guidelines shared with working group for feedback
• Identified and engaged with an external reviewer
• Presented the project at The 18th World Congress of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) in November 2021
• Disseminated information to the wider IC2A membership
All solutions developed by the OneHand projects are state of the art in the sense that no such market offerings exist today:

IC2A will develop the first standardised global rehabilitation guidelines for upper limb amputees / dysmelia:
IC2A aims to publish the literature review and guidelines for upper limb amputations and make them widely accessible and free to amputees, amputee associations and clinical personnel globally.
IC2A aims to also draft, finalise and publish the literature review and guidelines for congenital upper limb deficiencies and disseminate alongside the upper limb publications.
Having a global standardised guidelines supported by evidence based literature, will improve the quality of rehabilitation pathways for upper limb amputees. It will also provide information for clinicians as well as care givers for upper limb amputees.

TSC will develop the first ever VR rehab and training solution for prosthetic users:
The rehab and training journey is often fragmented and may result in the user getting training that is insufficient or takes too long (resulting in them abandoning prosthetic solutions).
With this VR solution users can train when they want to and focus on exercises that is most relevant for them, resulting in a better and more effective rehab process.

Hy5 will develop the market's most cost effective prosthesis to its functionality:
The hand is very robust, has several grips, is waterproof, customisable and modular in the sense that it can grow with the user. We aim for this to be a prosthetic that any user can get within their insurance scheme re-imbursement limit and has designed the product with manufacturing in mind.
