Development of nematode resistant crops by gene transfer of a broad spectrum nematode resistance system

Cel

Yield losses due to nematode infestation of crops are a problem throughout the EU. Natural resistance traits in crops usually confer resistance only to a subset of pathotypes but this resistance can be broken by selection of new more virulent pathotypes. This problem could be solved by a broad spectrum nematode resistance developed by MOGEN. This resistance system proved to be effective in a model plant. The aim of the project is to use this resistance system in cultivars of potato and other crops. The resistance system should firstly be developed in potato and will require modifications to achieve an optimal effect in other crops. Furthermore, suitable commercial cultivars need to be selected for cell culture and gene transfer experiments. Following transformation experiments, stable transformants have to be selected and screened for their nematode resistance. The comparison of two cultivars of different crops transformed by the resistance system will help to assess the effectiveness of the system used and reveal possible side effects on the plant or tubers/seeds.
