Analysis of the nod factor signal transduction cascade. Effects of inositolphospholipids on change of the cytoskeleton

The Rhizobium-legume symbiosis is set in motion by a signal exchange between plant and bacterium. The bacterial production of the so-call Nod factors play an essential role by triggering several plant responses like root hairs deformation, the formation of nodule primordia and the induction of several transcriptional-regulated plant genes. However, the signal transduction pathway leading to plant response is unknown. As it was mentioned, Nod factors induces root hairs deformation and this event is visible within 1 h of the induction. Although calcium ion and phosphoinositides have been suggested to play a rolet further studies are necessary to establish the transducer and second messenger involved in the transduction pathway. Firstly, by using a confocal microscope linked to a microinje(tion equipment we will be able to follow the Nod factors responses by measuring the effect of microinjected drugs in root hairs deformation. We will be focused on the inositolphospholipid signaling following preliminary studies on the metabolism of the precursor phospholipids. Secondly, by using a cell biology approach, we will study the involvement of phosphinositides in the actin cytoskeleton changing.
