Ecommerce enabled Demand Responsive Urban Logistic

Cel

eDRUL Project will investigate, develop and validate an innovative IST platform, and the supported service/business models, for improved management of freights distribution and logistics processes in urban area. Based on eCommerce / eBusiness architectures and concepts, the developed eDRUL platform will allow operation of innovative, demand responsive logistics schemes and new ways of working for the actors of the logistics chain. It will enable cooperation among logistics operators (B2B services) and improved interaction with the consumers and end-users of the retail system (B2C services). Based on open architectures and largely adopted IT standards, the eDRUL solutions will be validated in 3 European sites. Involving partners from 6 European countries, the eDRUL consortium comprises all main actors of urban logistics processes, including Authorities, Transport Operators, IT solution providers, service suppliers.

Objectives:
The overall objective of eDRUL Project is to investigate, develop and validate an innovative IST platform, and supported service models, for improved management of freight distribution and logistic processes in urban area. Strongly based on and integrated with e-Commerce/e-Business architectures and concepts, the developed solutions will enable:
1.Communication and team working among the various actors involved in the freight distribution process, through a set of innovative networked e-Business services (B2B segment);
2.Optimal use and improved interaction among the consumers and the logistics and retail system, through a number of e-Commerce services (B2C segment);
3.Management of available resources of the logistic system (fleets and available capacity, logistics platforms, goods collection and unload areas, routes, etc.) in a way to realise flexible, demand-driven freights distribution schemes integrated with the ITS urban scenario.

Work description:
eDRUL will implement, apply and validate innovative e-logistics solutions in 3 different European sites. The project approach includes the following main elements:
· Analysis of the e-logistics needs of urban areas (regulatory aspects, IST infrastructures and e-Commerce/e-Business services) and of different user categories within the urban logistic chain (end-users, Authorities, fleet operators, etc.);
· Identification of main objectives for the target IST architecture (economics, mobility, environment, etc.) and definition of the main system requirements;
· Functional specifications, design and development of the general eDRUL platform (logical scheme, main components and information interactions, e-Business and e-Commerce integrated services and interactions with the ITS infrastructures). · Application, testing and validation of eDRUL solutions at different levels in 3 urban sites, with different area characteristics and well defined mobility policies and transport infrastructures;
· Comparative evaluation of site results, by a common framework and evaluation methodology, as regards mobility, transportation and sustainability impacts;
· Assessment of the business case for demand responsive, e-logistics freight distribution systems, and the conditions under which these may be implemented successfully in European urban areas;
· Dissemination of eDRUL achievements through the a User Group/Logistic Forum, promotion with the Authorities and market stimulation for innovative e-logistic schemes and IST solutions.
eDRUL consortium comprises all main actors of urban logistics processes including Authorities, transport operators, IT and services suppliers from 6 European countries. Based on eDRUL application site results, it will develop a new market for the identified IT solutions and determine the regulatory, institutional, operational dimensions for implementation of the eDRUL solutions in other European cities.

Milestones:
Project results will include generic IST architectures based on the integration of logistics IST platform with eBusiness/eCommerce services, customised and validated in 3 different application sites. The main milestones are:
user needs analysis, system requirements and business model;
eDRUL architecture specification, design and development;
verification and site validation;
local and common eDRUL impacts evaluation;
guidelines for industrial deployment and results dissemination.
