Computer-supported collaborative learning in primary and secondary education

Cel

The central objective

The central objective of this project is to investigate the cognitive and didactical aspects of computer-supported collaborative learning networks (abbreviated as CLNs). CLNs are learning environments in which educational multimedia are used to create a community of learners who build knowledge together. CLNs are the learning contexts in which information networks, but also teacher, learners and learning methods are included. The central question of the project is: How can effective learning in CLNs be supported in European primary and secondary education? The project will inquire the educational use of different kinds of CLNs which support as well individual as collaborative learning from a cognitive point of view.

Key objectives

Within the context of the central objective, key objectives of the project are:

1. To develop didactical models, design principles and learning scenario's for the use of CLNs in primary and secondary education,
2. To experiment with different kinds of tools which support the learning process and the acquisition of knowledge building skills;
3. To evaluate the (meta)cognitive, motivational and social effects of collaborative learning, supported by computer networks,

Why collaborative learning networks (CLNs)?

European society is increasingly dependent on information and knowledge and needs to keep up with and anticipate to global developments. Nowaday's school children and students are part of the information society and school should become a place where students can enlarge the roles they play in such a society. Students need to acquire skills to cope with information and information overload. They need to acquire skills to build knowledge. CLNs bring the opportunity to acquire these skills in an integrated way. Technology helps students to work with knowledge, just as it helps adult knowledge workers

Methodology

The research is characterized as ecologically valid action research. Action research is an approach which is directed by teachers and students and their everyday context. This approach guarantees professionalization of teachers concerning the implementation and use of CLNs. It implies certain kinds of emphasis and the selection of appropriate methods for analysis from the literature. The major aim is to make visible not only how CLNs enhance knowledge acquisition, but also whether students are enabled to become competent and active actors in their own environments. Case studies and comparative experiments will help to identify best practice.
