The FEESE project (Fostering employment in the environment sector in Europe) will identify trends related to environmental employment and sustainability among small, medium and large companies in Finland, Germany and Sweden. Supported under Objective 4 of the European Social Fund in the participating countries and NUTEK, the Swedish National Board for Industrial and Technical Development, this project aims to throw light onto the future perspectives of the environment industry in a sample of European countries. The strategic importance of the FEESE project lies in the fact that the environment industry is the second fastest-growing sectors, with an annual growth of 8 per cent, according to OECD. Only the information technology sector, with an annual growth of 11 per cent exceeds this. The project grew out of the seminar on 'Perspectives and employment in the environmental sector in Europe', which took place in Hamburg in September 1998. It is expected that other European countries such as Austria and Italy will join the project in the future.
