Council recommends limits to electromagnetic radiation exposure
Member States are being encouraged by the Council of ministers of the EU to limit the public exposure to electromagnetic radiation by adopting a framework of basic restrictions and reference levels. Where necessary, Member States should enforce appropriate measures to ensure these levels are adhered to. In order to protect the health of workers and consumers the Council further recommends that Member States provide information to the public on the health impact of electromagnetic radiation and what measures can be taken to avoid unnecessary risk. Research should be encouraged to further knowledge about these effects, and reports should be complied on a state by state basis relating to the experience of the preventative measures imposed after a period of three years. The European Commission is also invited to contribute towards the process, both in establishing a European standard for assessing levels of exposure, and encouraging research into the long and short term effects of exposure.
