Environmental consequences of electricity and gas market liberalisation in the enlarged EU
The European Commission wants to find out what the environmental impacts of electricity and gas market liberalisation in the enlarged European Union will be up to 2010. It has recently published a call for tenders for an investigation of alternative ways to implement the relevant Directives (96/92 and 98/30) at Member State level and to assess the environmental implications. In particular, the Commission is interested in the effects of emissions of atmospheric pollutants, including greenhouse gases. The study should focus on effects related to changes in electricity markets, with a preliminary assessment of the impact of the forthcoming enlargement of the EU on the Community electricity and gas markets, together with any linked environmental effects.
