Satellite and terrestrial broadcasting systems
A new DG XIII study entitled 'Development of satellite and terrestrial digital broadcasting systems and services and implications for education and training' is now available. Authored by UK-based educational consultancy pjb, the study explores in detail the technical issues relating to the development of interactive digital TV. It covers issues that will need to be addressed by organisations affected by satellite, terrestrial and cable digital broadcasting systems in the field of education and training, focusing on the development of interactive TV learning services to the home via low cost or consumer receivers. Providing learning services to target audiences in the most effective way is increasingly an issue. The opportunities afforded by interactivity can turn a passive viewer into an active participant - thus increasing the opportunities of in-depth learning. There are now over 1000 TV channels accessible to homes in Europe via satellite using digital technologies. With the correct equipment it is also possible to broadcast data via satellite directly to the computer. These opportunities are explored in depth with a particular focus on interactive digital TV. The study, which was funded by the Telematics Applications programme, primarily covers developments in Europe, but considers developments in other parts of the world as well.
