On 3 February 2000, Ms Margot Wallström, the European Commissioner for the Environment, held an Internet chat with European citizens who questioned her about the environment. Participants had the opportunity to put questions to the Commissioner in any of the 11 official languages of the European Union, and it was also possible for anyone to follow the whole discussion in English. During the discussion, participants asked Ms Wallström questions such as: - 'Ms Wallström, how can we sensitive SMEs [small and medium sized enterprises] have better waste management?' - 'According to the recent EEA [European Environment Agency] report, the state of Europe's environment has not improved. I know of only one good remedy: strict and equal enforcement - what is the Commission doing to ensure this?' - 'How much does electrical energy form nuclear power plants contribute to carbon dioxide reduction and what is its importance for a cleaner environment in the EU and in the world?' - 'Does the Commissioner think that all those huge conferences really help the environment or is it just political window dressing to keep the people quiet?' The full transcripts of Ms Wallström's on-line conversations, including her responses to these questions, are now available from: URL: http://europa.eu.int/chatwallstrom/index.htm(odnośnik otworzy się w nowym oknie) The Commissioner received over 700 questions in her on-line mailbox, created especially for the debate, and was therefore unable to respond to all of them in the time allocated for the Internet chat. However, the Commissioner and her assistants will now strive to reply to all unanswered questions directly via e-mail.
