A European Education Area, increased mobility for students, lifelong learning, particularly in relation to new technologies and the promotion of eLearning were urged by the EU's ESC (Economic and Social Committee) on 1 March. The Committee adopted a document by working group members M.Koryfidis (Greece) and M.Rupp (Germany) addressing the question of what form of education system the EU needs. The document recommends an intensification of effort to create a true European Education Space, prioritising mobility in all its forms, including virtual mobility as well as physical mobility of teachers and students and the mobility of new ideas and good practice. Lifelong learning represents the key to involving the citizen in the information society, in new technologies and in the new economy, the committee agreed, and the eLearning initiative constitutes the cornerstone in the Commission's strategy to promote the use of the Internet, create an education network and develop virtual mobility
