Supercomputer to reveal the secrets of the universe?
A cosmology machine which is claimed will help solve the mysteries of the universe will be launched at the University of Durham in the UK on 31 July. The supercomputer's development was financed by the UK's government funded 'Particle physics and astronomy research council' (PPARC), which also funds the UK's membership to the European organisation for nuclear research (CERN) and the European Space Agency (ESA). Once the computer is switched on, it will be capable of 10 billion calculations per second, and will be able to provide information on the past, present and future of the universe in detail unknown up until now. 'The cosmology machine takes data from billions of observations about the behaviour of stars, gases, galaxies and the mysterious dark matter throughout the universe and then calculates at ultra high speed how galaxies and solar systems formed and evolved,' a spokesman for the University of Durham said. 'The new machine will allow us to recreate the entire evolution of the universe, from its hot Big Bang beginning to the present,' added Professor Carlos Frenk, director of the UK's Institute for computational cosmology.ammes na
