MEPs call for immediate marketing ban on cosmetics tested on animals
The European Parliament adopted an urgent resolution on 24 September following a Commission proposal to postpone a ban on the marketing of cosmetics tested on animals. MEPs called for a withdrawal of the decision, which they said goes against the Commission's own rules. The resolution also called on Member States to implement a marketing ban on animal experiments and asked them not to endorse the Commission's draft measures. 'It is simply not acceptable for the Commission to try to avoid compliance with its own laws. Parliament has said very clearly that it wants an end to the marketing of animal tested products with a timescale which ensures human health is protected,' said British MEP John Bowis. The Commission has argued that a postponement of the ban is necessary on account of a lack of alternative methods for testing cosmetics.
