Applications developed for next generation networks
One of the integral parts of the next generation networks is expected to be the latest version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6. For this reason, applications need to take into account both the advanced services provided by the networks and protocols as well as the impact of the underlying network. In order to extend the framework of applications for maximising their benefits from the deployment of the new networking services, the LONG project developed new software. These applications have been tested and validated in various next generation network scenarios and are expected to play a key role in deployment of IPv6. Quality of Service (QoS) refers to the performance properties of a network service, including throughput, delay and priority. Focusing on integrating most of the key QoS requirements for supporting the new IP network, Network Performance Meter (NETMETER) has been developed. Offering a graphical user interface, this tool allows flexible and modular means for measuring QoS parameters over IPv4 and IPv6 networks. Moreover, a set of network applications called IPv6 WEB TOOLS are also provided through the web. These allow all IP users to employ them from an IPv6 host within the project network to other IPv6 networks. Among these, there are various options including ping, mtr, traceroute, nslookup, mail, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) queries.
