Faster ferries with less noise

Advancements in noise reduction technology have brought the comfort-class criteria for high-speed vessels to a more attainable level.

Fast Ferries represent a marine transportation market that is widely expanding worldwide. The economic benefits are higher speeds and load capacity at minimum costs. Improving these parameters even further, however, has to be combined with the design requirement imposed by classification societies for improved passenger comfort Noise and Vibration (N&V) levels. A feasible solution was an area-wise distribution of noise levels as opposed to distinguishing between vessels of different sizes. Through the use of statistical analysis of noise levels on high-speed vessels, two viable proposals have arisen. One involved the increase of length division from 50m to 100m, which would give a comfort rating of 1. If the length division stays the same, the maximum noise levels would receive a comfort rating of 3, which is the minimum requirement of safety. In order to make the requirements more realistic, the noise level requirements have been raised by 2-5dB based on measurements onboard new structures. The advantage of noise reduction technology advancements is that the requirements are likely to be met in the future. This would serve both the crew and passengers on open deck areas, making for a more pleasant journey.
