The European Commission has adopted two Decisions extending the Community eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS), established by Council Regulation 1836/93/EEC. The Decisions relate to voluntary participation of industrial companies in EMAS. Under the first Decision (97/264/EC), the Commission formally recognizes three accreditation procedures for certification bodies. These include procedures established under Austrian and German law, and under the European accreditation of certification (EAC) guidelines. Bodies accredited under these procedures will implement appropriate certification procedures. The second Decision (97/265/EC) recognizes that the ISO standard 14001:1996 and the European standard EN ISO 14001:1996 correspond to the requirements of the Regulation.
