Gathering data on stamping sheet metal parts

A database involving PVD (Physical vapour deposition) coating, die materials and lubricants has been designed.

The ECOSTAMP project has addressed two major problems involving the stamping process of sheet metal parts. One is that it has provided efficient dies for rapid prototyping. The other is that it has disposed of the need for harmful liquid lubricants in stamping and deep drawing operations. This was done through the use of surface coatings. These are able to withstand forming pressures, eliminate the need for harmful oils and provide improved lubrication, better productivity and better surface finish. Part of the project work carried out during the first year entailed technical activities. More specifically, the necessary material and data were chosen and prepared. It also consisted of important decisions on the demands of thin films for supporting necessary stamping efforts and providing the requested surface properties. The resulting database or data collection serves as a glimpse of the current situation used in the industry. Thus, it can be updated to fit the needs of the partners and compared at the project end to be used for implementation and marketing. The database employs Microsoft® Office Access 2003 software and it is the responsibility of the partners to upload appropriate information. The accumulated information will be gathered into a database for use in economical, ecological and technical evaluation.
