Nuclear safety should be a priority in the pre-accession negotiations that the European Union (EU) is having with the applicant countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states, according to MEP Gordon Adam (Northumbria, PES).

He will be reporting to the European Parliament session in Strasbourg next week on the Commission paper on nuclear-related activities for these countries.

He welcomes the measures taken by the EU in the nuclear sector for these countries and stresses the importance of nuclear safety as a crucial element in the pre-accession strategy. His report calls for a series of measures to ensure that nuclear safety is a priority in pre-accession negotiations. He is also concerned to ensure that there is proper control over EU funds allocated to promoting nuclear safety in central and eastern Europe.
