New forms of mutual learning will help to meet the complex challenges of the twenty-first century, according to the organisers of an international conference on "Transdisciplinarity: Joint problem solving among science, technology and society". The conference is scheduled to be held in Zurich, Switzerland, between 27 February and 1 March 2000.

The conference will consider knowledge as the sole unlimited global resource, the use of which will effect the quality of life of present and future generations. It will provide a forum to investigate the ways that transdisciplinarity can be applied to make the best use of available knowledge. It will give participants an opportunity to meet experts in the field, to develop contacts with transdisciplinarity practitioners from the research world and society at large, and to debate both current and future prospects for transdisciplinarity.

The conference aims to develop transdisciplinarity practice, promote transdisciplinarity research, and create favourable institutional structures and powerful incentives.

The organisers have announced a call for proposals for contributions to the conference, to focus on the following topics:

- Problems requiring transdisciplinarity research;
- Success stories and examples of transdisciplinarity research;
- Tools for successful transdisciplinarity research (methodology, knowledge exchange, problem-solving mechanisms, assessment, stimulation and motivation in the professional environment);
- Ideas for creative methods of problem identification, research and problem solving.

All contributions should discuss the following issues:

- Good practices in transdisciplinarity work (key methodological tools and successful strategies);
- Key experiences of collaboration between academic and non-academic partners;
- Motivational aspects of the professional environment including any shortcomings.

Contributors will automatically be entered for the Swiss Transdisciplinarity Award.

The event is being organised by the Swiss National Science Foundation, Berne, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich and Asea Brown Boveri Corporate Research Ltd.
