The first major forum for all parties concerned about European food safety, will take place in London on 19 and 20 October. The conference, 'Food safety in Europe: challenges and opportunities', will offer the opportunity to assess food safety issues, take stock of advanced research, and identify future research methods.

The event will allow European researchers to demonstrate at an international level that their research contribution, and in particular actions carried out under the 'Quality of life and management of living resources' programme are very important in ensuring the generation of scientific and technological know-how.

The main themes of the conference are: policy perspectives, food microbiology, food safety and processing, food toxicology and food safety and the food chain. Keynote contributions will be made by speakers from the European Commission and Parliament as well as food safety authorities from the UK, Ireland, France and the USA. Conclusions from the EC, USDA, WHO and consumers' associations will close the conference.

Representatives from SMEs, research organisations, retailers, consumer organisations and universities are expected to attend the conference, where they will have the chance to network and discuss their ideas and experiences. Research is expected to create significant opportunities at European level for the food industry.

The conference is awarded temporal relevance due to the recent crises in food supply (BSE, PCBs, dioxin) affecting both health and the economy. These problems have highlighted the important contribution of science and technology in the detection and avoidance of such crises, as well as the importance of supporting further research.

The European Commission, the UK Ministry for agriculture, fisheries and food, and Beta technology ltd are supporting the event.
