ESRIN, the European Space Agency's (ESA) European space research institute, will host the third DataGRID conference from 3 to 5 October 2001 in Frascati, Italy.

The DataGRID project was launched in January this year to create a new worldwide data and computational grid for scientific exploration by sharing large scale databases across a wide range of scientific communities. These resources will be connected through a high speed network 'glue' called 'middleware.' The grid will take the concept of the world wide web to a whole new level, providing scientists around the world with flexible access to shared databases up to a petabyte in size - equivalent to the data on a pile of CD-ROMS standing about a mile high.

ESA is one of six partners in the DataGRID project, funded by the European Union and headed by CERN, the European organisation for nuclear research. ESA's role in the 9.8 million euro, three year project is to demonstrate the use of the DataGRID for earth observation. Distributing the constant stream of satellite information which is currently used for applications such as navigation and environmental monitoring over a number of low cost Internet connected platforms would open up new possibilities for many space applications. An international consortium of industry and research centres will begin work on the project this month.

In addition, the global grid forum (GGF) will be hosted by the Italian National institute of nuclear physics at its national laboratory centre, also in Frascati. Starting on 7 October, this three day meeting will discuss GRID applications for science and industry, as well as standards and funding for the project.

The GGF is a forum of individual researchers working on grid technologies, created through a merger of the grid Forum, the eGrid European grid forum and the Grid community in Asia and the Pacific. For further information, please consult the following web address:
