An ESPRIT-COPERNICUS Symposium on Distributed Enterprise, Intelligent Automation and Industrial Benchmarking will be held in Wroclaw, Poland, on 23-24 April 1998.

Organized by the European Commission (DG III) and the Wroclaw Centre for Technology Transfer (Poland), with the support of the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), the symposium will focus on the theme "Putting ICT-technology into practice". The symposium programme will cover three main sub-themes:

- Distributed enterprise:
Sessions on this topic will emphasize the importance of ICT tools for enabling intelligent decision making and networking of manufacturing, production and distribution networks. Particular attention will be paid to issues such as distributed management, distributed enterprise knowledge, intelligent agents for management and optimization of networking and data handling, concurrent engineering, etc;

- Intelligent automation:
Recent developments in the field of control/robotics/mechatronics will be discussed, including intelligent man/machine interfaces and equipment, intelligent control systems and shop-floor control, human centred automation, and other state of the art developments in the field. Special focus will be placed on the topic of the increased interaction between humans and automation systems and the role of human resources in future automation systems;

- Industrial benchmarking:
The main emphasis of sessions in benchmarking will be on activities related to the industrial benchmarking and the consequent business re-engineering of industrial processes from a generic point of view, (e.g. how to conduct benchmarking and which are the tools to support implementation). Leading experts in the field will present their views and representative case studies will be described.

The aim of the symposium is to provide an open forum for discussion and the exchange of information on the latest developments and trends in these three key areas. Several ESPRIT and COPERNICUS projects will be presented. Emphasis will be on exchanging practical experience in the deployment of ICT solutions. The event will also provide a platform for meetings between industrialists and researchers from the East and the West. Information on cooperation possibilities in research and technological development will also be provided. It is expected that industrialists, researchers, representatives of industrial associations, regional and national authorities will attend.
