The latest in the series of Blue Seminars on aquatic processes and water technology organized by the Joint Research Centre's Environment Institute will focus on "The impact of acid rain on fish". This seminar will take place in Ispra, Italy, on 18 March 1998.

The seminar will discuss aspects of aqueous aluminium chemistry and the reason why acid rain kills fish. It will be led by Antonio Poleo of the University of Oslo.

Current understanding of the effect of aluminium in natural waters and its interactions with aquatic biota is based largely on chemical equilibrium constants. However, the environment is not in a steady state, meaning that true chemical equilibrium is rarely approached in natural systems such as surface waters. In recent years, scientists have focused on the acute toxicity of unstable aluminium chemistry to various fish and invertebrate species. A common feature of these studies has been to test the prediction that aluminium toxicity is correlated to the degree of ongoing aluminium polymerization.
