The 25th Anniversary Conference of the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) - "Measuring tomorrow" - will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 9 to 13 November 1998.

The European Community has been active in measurement related work for over 25 years. The Commission's role in this field was formalized in 1974 with the establishment of the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR). The European Union's involvement in measurement-related work, currently integrated into the Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) programme, is now well established and poised to develop further under the Community's Fifth RTD Framework Programme.

The 25th BCR Anniversary Conference will provide a unique forum for the exchange of information between academia and industry and the establishment of new partnerships in this important field. The Conference will comprise the following four inter-related events:

- Standards, Measurements and Testing Conference, 9-11 November 1998:
Organized by the European Commission, the conference will examine the importance of measurement-related activities and identify major trends in the field of standards, measurements and testing. Distinguished speakers will discuss the importance of measurements in the worldwide context, measurements in support of industry and measurements for society. The conference will conclude with a presentation of the Community's Standards, Measurements and Testing activity in the context of the new Fifth Framework Programme, and a Round Table discussion with representatives from research, industry and regulatory bodies;

- Standards, Measurements and Testing Exhibition and Poster Session, 9-12 November 1998:
Organized by the European Commission, in collaboration with the University of Plymouth, the exhibition will comprise exhibits from instrument manufacturers and stands/posters presenting the results of completed and on-going projects funded by the SMT programme;

- Training sessions for young/new scientists, 11 November:
The training sessions are organized by the University of Plymouth and will be particularly relevant for young/new scientists. They will provide training and advice on the initiation, preparation and implementation of an RTD project in the field of standards, measurements and testing (including identifying appropriate sources of funding), on the application of quality rules in research, and on the validation of instruments/methods;

- Symposium on Certified Reference Materials (CRMs), 12-13 November 1998:
The symposium, organized by the University of Plymouth, will comprise a wide-ranging series of sessions dealing with the use of certified reference materials to support in-process quality control, standardization, accreditation, etc. The role and evolving market for CRMs will also be discussed. Each parallel session will be introduced by invited lecturers and will be followed by workshops and round-table discussions. Training sessions related to CRM preparation and organization of certification work will complement the symposium;

- IUPAC Workshop, 11 November 1998:
Organized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), this workshop will be attended by major world producers of CRMs. The aim is to discuss the proper use of reference materials in an international context.

Delegates may register either for the whole conference or separately for one or more of the events.
