Research programme (EEC, Euratom) to be implemented by the Joint Research Centre - Plutonium fuels and actinide research -, 1977-1979
In view of the special properties of transuranium elements (their radioactivity and radio-toxicity), research in this field had to be carried out in specialized installations. The Community concentrated its research at the European Institute for Transuranium Elements based at the JRC's Research Establishment at Karlsruhe. This programme was pursuant to the JRC's previous programme in this field.
To contribute to the understanding of the safety limits in the use of nuclear fuels; to study the measurement of fission products and the quantities of transplutonium elements produced under irradiation; to study the problems of industrial reprocessing of advanced nuclear fuels in conventional reprocessing plants; and to carry out basic research into the physical and thermodynamic properties of actinides and their compounds.
Three projects:
- Utilization limits of plutonium fuels;
- Plutonium and actinides aspects of the safety of the nuclear fuel cycle;
- Actinide research.
The Commission, assisted by the board of governors of the Joint Research Centre (JRC), was responsible for the implementation of the programme by means of the services of the JRC.
