Sustainable Pavements for European New Member States

Cel

The standard of the road infrastructure differs throughout the European Union member states. In general, the means of transportation are of a lower standard in the New Member States, but the present volume of heavy road transport requires a sustainable road infrastructure immediately. In most of the New Member States there is a constant need for new resistant pavement materials, that should comply with the EU regulations. Due to the priority of motorway construction, the standard of maintenance of other roads has lowered, resulting in an increased need for effective road maintenance and improvement over the years to come. The materials and technologies now used in the New Member States differ from those adopted in common practice in the EU-15. The research work will focus on developing procedures for producing and implementing materials for road construction, taking into account the tradition in the New Member States, the availability of materials and construction techniques, as well as the specifics of already constructed roads. This will be achieved by four technical work packages, which will deal with the optimization of assessment techniques and procedures for roads, the improvement of pavement structures and evaluation of materials for road upgrading, and the minimization of the impact of road traffic on the environment. The goal of all the technical work packages and transparent management is to produce practical guidelines or recommendations. Field trials and monitoring will be used to verify the research results. The wide dissemination of outcomes, as well as clustering of the research work, will be a task of great importance. The consortium is composed mainly of experts from the New Member States in order to ensure that the research will be focused on issues relevant to the New Member States.
