International migration, integration and social sohesion in Europe

Cel

International migration is a fundamental issue of politics and policy today and in the future. This will have far-reaching consequences for the member states and for the EU - how to manage demand- and supply-driven migration, how to integrate immigrants, how to adapt institutional arrangements to preserve social cohesion? To provide comprehensive theoretical and empirical knowledge as a reliable basis for policy, 19 research institutes in 10 European countries will establish a NoE in the domain of Intern ational Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMISCOE). Based on their wide-ranging skills and experience, the institutes will implement an integrated, multidisciplinary, rigorously comparative research programme, with Europe as its central focus. They will bring together some 300 selected, highly qualified researchers, whose ongoing research will be integrated into the programme. In addition, they will launch two new strategic lines of research. Special strategies will be devised to engage researc hers from Central and Eastern Europe and the southern part of the Mediterranean Basin in the research programme, eventually leading to full membership in the Consortium in a period of three years. IMISCOE will also develop programmes to spread excellence in Europe. Drawing on its expertise, it will design and implement training programmes to foster research of the highest standard both within the Network and extending to all parts of Europe. It will also pursue a communication and dissemination strategy to make research findings available to politicians, policymakers and stakeholders, as well as to the public at large. The 19 partners are committing 203 researchers and 95 PhD candidates to the Network for a 5-year period, a budgeted annual input of more than ? 10 mln. With reference to the EC?s letter dated November 5, 2003 (RTD/K-4/A.I.S/sv D (2003) 567424, IMISCOE is qualified for an annual ? 0.9 mln grant.
